A warm welcome to the little blue potting shed that is my studio. It may be little, but here you'll find landscape paintings and prints inspired by Scottish weather and light, small colourful textile and knitted gifts along with handmade cards.

The Little Blue Shed: a potted history

Welcome to The Little Blue shed website. Please have a look around!

The Little Blue Shed has been home to my art studio since 2008. It began with an 8 x 5ft potting shed at the bottom of the garden. (See images of the original shed in my welcome message.) The first shed was left behind to be loved by its new owner when we moved house in 2019, and my new one has evolved inside and out by using almost entirely reclaimed materials. Huge thanks go to my friend, Roddy Maclennan for his building expertise plus his ample recycled wood pile for the timber supplies!

The tones of blue paint may have slightly changed; the stable door has remained though plus the interior space is more adaptable. (And twice the size with the added deck corner and sitting area.) More importantly, my new shed is surrounded by garden sights, sounds and plenty of light. It is my haven and retreat after a busy day’s teaching in a local high school.

I continue to paint what I love, drawing inspiration from the Scottish landscape, plants and still life. I enjoy combining acrylics, graphite, and collage to evoke light and space. My palette is usually filled with shades of blue, turquoise, ochres, and greens. I also make hand-made cards along with small knitted/crocheted/sewn gifts using brightly coloured yarns and papers.

As well as having artwork available for sale in my shed throughout the year, I regularly exhibit a few small pieces in the Line Gallery, Linlithgow:
and also Culross Pottery and Gallery:

I have participated for several years in the Forth Valley Open Studios “Artbeat” events and am delighted to be participating again this year: https://forthvalleyartbeat.com/artists/browse-by-discipline/mixed-media/

I am also very proud to share the name ‘Little Blue Shed’ with a wonderful project in Uganda created by Tanja Curcic in the small village of Murfibira in 2010: https://www.littleblueshed.online/

The Ugandan Little Blue Shed project started with a few women learning new skills, and how to sustain themselves and their families in an honest and nurturing way. It has developed into several groups learning, creating, and growing together, thereby empowering themselves to earn their own income through creativity. I’m donating a percentage of all my 2021 sales to help support the amazing work the project is doing.
